Welcome, What will YOUR voice be?
Welcome to “Where Words Ignite Worlds,” friends, an independent journalism project based in Indianapolis, IN, seeking to shine a light on transformative change agents in the arts and in areas of communication and community building. From musicians and visual artists to poets, activists and change agent leaders who view “society as text,” we seek to provide a spotlight on those who use their respective voices to build community and effect positive social change.
This project was born of Spring 2024 course at IUPUI (now IUI) titled “Rhythm & Revolution: Music and Social Change,” in which we collaboratively posed the question, “Beyond analyzing change agents in music and society globally, how might combine our energies and passions to aid those who do so much with their voices to better society each day, to fight injustice, and amplify the voices of those too long forgotten?” In this first issue, we highlight musical change agents, locally and globally, with articles written by IUI scholars. Moving forward, we wish to expand our reach, to also include YOUR voices if you might be so inspired. Is there a musician whose voice YOU would like to amplify? Beyond music, are there artists, poets, community change agents who you think deserve a platform and greater attention, to the good work they are doing? If so, we would love to speak more, and to keep this important conversation going in the months and years ahead. If interested, please consider dropping a line at the “Contact Us” button at the top of this page.
